TOKYO, Aug 09 (News On Japan) - In a bid to strengthen the crackdown on the illegal outflow of cash overseas, Narita Airport has introduced Japan's first 'currency-detecting dog.'
These specially trained dogs are capable of sniffing out paper currency concealed in travelers' luggage or international mail.
According to regulations, anyone carrying cash or checks exceeding 1 million yen when entering or leaving the country is required to declare it to customs to prevent money laundering and other crimes.
The Ministry of Finance stated that, anticipating an increase in attempts to illegally carry cash abroad during the busy Obon holiday season, it introduced the currency-detecting dog at Narita Airport on August 8—the first such instance in Japan.
The ministry added that it will "consider expanding the use of these dogs depending on the social situation."
