NAHA, Oct 27 (News On Japan) - The King and Queen portraying Ryukyu royalty promoted highlights of the upcoming Shuri Castle Restoration Festival, which will begin on November 1. The annual festival celebrates the culture of the Ryukyu Kingdom and aims to build momentum for the ongoing restoration of Shuri Castle, which was destroyed by fire in 2019.
The event features the grand Ryukyu Dynasty Parade, recreating the royal attire and solemn pageantry of the ancient court. This year, a new “Shuri Castle Restoration Walk” is planned, where participants will parade along Kokusai Street toward the castle, symbolizing unity and renewal.
Yusuke Matayoshi, who plays the King, said: “I sincerely hope to celebrate together with many people and carry on the history and culture of Shuri for the next generation.”
Yumi Sunabe, who plays the Queen, said: “We want people to see us and feel what life was like in the Ryukyu Dynasty. We’re both nervous and excited as we give our best to bring that world to life.”
The Shuri Castle Restoration Festival will run for three days starting November 1.
