Jan 28 (NHK) - A railway operator in Hokkaido, northern Japan, has launched a winter steam locomotive service through wetlands in the eastern part of the prefecture.
JR Hokkaido operates the steam locomotive, commonly referred to as the Winter Wetlands line. The train takes passengers through marshlands on a 48-kilometer trip between Kushiro and Shibecha Stations.
The locomotive chugged away from Kushiro Station on Saturday carrying about 300 passengers after a departure ceremony at the station.
The train carriages are warmed with coal stoves. Some travelers enjoyed toasting dried squid snacks on them. Others gazed out the windows looking for wild animals such as deer.
A 24-year-old man said he has long wanted to travel on a steam train. He said he is so happy to have such an opportunity.
The winter tourist attraction will run through February 25th, mainly on weekends.
