Nov 28 (NHK) - A patrol robot equipped with artificial intelligence is being tested at a Tokyo railway station.
The media was given a look at the experimental guard robot at Seibu-Shinjuku Station in central Tokyo on Tuesday.
The robot was jointly developed by Seibu Railway Company, the IT firm Nihon Unisys, and others. It stands 1.67 meters tall and weighs about 170 kilograms. It moves around the station, checking the surroundings with its camera, and alerts the station staff if any suspicious persons or objects are detected.
In a demonstration, as soon as the robot found a person who was apparently ill, it made a call to the smartphone of a station employee.
Seibu Railway says the experimental use of a patrol robot at a station is the first in Japan.
