Jul 21 (NHK) - Japanese investigative authorities have confirmed that some firms in the country were among those targeted by cyberattacks carried out by Chinese state-backed groups.
The United States, Britain and other countries issued statements on Monday that accuse China of a global campaign of cyberattacks.
They said it is highly likely that hacking groups, including one known as APT40, were linked to the Chinese government and involved in the attacks.
Sources say investigators have found that a major Japanese chemical manufacturer and trading house were targeted in the attacks. They said they have not confirmed any damage to the firms from the attacks so far.
Japanese investigators are gathering information and stepping up preventive measures in cooperation with foreign organizations.
National Public Safety Commission Chairperson Tanahashi Yasufumi said at a news conference on Tuesday that cyber threats have become a serious challenge. He stressed the need for the international community to work together to counter such attacks.
