Taxi Dashcam Captures Landslide in Izumo

SHIMANE, Jul 11 (News On Japan) - A local taxi in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture, narrowly escaped falling debris as dashcam footage shows the road ahead collapsing following record-breaking heavy rainfall on Tuesday.

The taxi was on its way back after dropping off a passenger when the driver noticed a large hole ahead. He quickly turned the steering wheel to the left.

Driver: 'The road has collapsed. My car is stuck in a ditch, can someone help?
Radio: 'Collapsed?'
Driver: 'The Misaki Road has collapsed.'
Radio: 'Is it possible for cars to pass?'
Driver: 'Cars can't pass. I'm leaving the car, it's dangerous.'

Moments after the driver exited the vehicle, the collapse occurred.

On July 10th, a drone survey revealed that the cliff had significantly collapsed towards the sea, narrowly missing the width of the car.

Izumo Sightseeing Taxi President Minoru Watanabe stated, 'Thanks to stopping towards the left, the vehicle did not fall. If the driver had avoided the collapse by turning right, the car would have likely fallen down the cliff towards the coast. Our training emphasizes 'left avoidance,' and the driver followed this protocol, thankfully avoiding any injuries. It was a blessing in disguise.'

However, some areas remain isolated. About 230 households, totaling 540 residents, in the tourist area of Hinomisaki are cut off.

Due to the influence of the seasonal rain front, Izumo City received over 200 millimeters of rain in a single day.
