KYOTO, Aug 08 (News On Japan) - The Hokuriku Shinkansen extension to the Kansai region has proposed three potential sites for a new station in Kyoto: beneath JR Kyoto Station with an east-west alignment, beneath the south side of Kyoto Station with a north-south alignment, and near JR Katsuragawa Station.
The full line is expected to generate an annual economic impact of approximately 2.7 trillion yen.
However, extended construction periods and rising costs have inflated the project budget to over 5 trillion yen. Additionally, there are concerns about the impact on groundwater due to the underground station, particularly affecting areas like Fushimi known for sake production.
The project faces challenges in convincing local residents of its benefits despite the increased costs and potential environmental impact.
