TOKYO, Aug 26 (News On Japan) - Duty-free sales at department stores in Japan have already surpassed last year's total by July, driven by strong demand for luxury goods.
The Japan Department Stores Association announced that duty-free sales for the year through July reached 397.8 billion yen, exceeding the previous annual record of 348.4 billion yen set last year.
The surge in sales was largely fueled by luxury items such as bags, watches, and jewelry, supported by the yen's depreciation.
Overall sales in July, including domestic customers, totaled 501.1 billion yen, marking the 29th consecutive month of growth. The association noted that summer clothing performed well, with not only sale items but also full-priced products selling briskly.
