Special Exhibition Commemorates 100 Years Since the Kita-Tajima Earthquake

HYOGO, May 13 (News On Japan) - A century after the 1925 Kita-Tajima Earthquake, the city of Toyooka is hosting a special exhibition to preserve the memory of the disaster and its aftermath.

The earthquake, which struck on May 23rd, 1925, claimed the lives of over 400 people through building collapses and fires. Ahead of the 100th anniversary this month, the exhibition revisits the destruction and the recovery that followed, using photographs and video footage to convey the scale of the tragedy and the resilience of the community.

"It would be meaningful if learning about what was created in the aftermath of the quake 100 years ago could slightly change the way people see the city today," said Hamilton, the exhibition’s organizer.

The exhibition runs through May 25th.
