TOKYO, Aug 26 (News On Japan) - As the Japanese government designates August 26 as "Volcano Disaster Prevention Day" starting this year, an educational event was held at a museum in Tokyo, where participants deepened their understanding of volcanoes.
Volcano Disaster Prevention Day was established to commemorate the first volcanic observatory in Japan, which was set up on August 26, 1911, at Mount Asama.
On August 25, the day before Volcano Disaster Prevention Day, the National Museum of Nature and Science in Ueno, Tokyo, held a class on the formation of volcanoes and the mechanisms of eruptions.
Participants shared their thoughts, with one saying, "If an underwater volcano erupts, I thought it would be dangerous for whales and other sea creatures that might be sleeping there. It would also be dangerous for humans."
Another participant noted, "Understanding the formation of volcanoes and the ocean floor is significant."
On August 26, a government-sponsored commemorative ceremony is scheduled to take place in Tokyo.
