HOKKAIDO, Jul 30 (News On Japan) - The Japan Meteorological Agency held a second press conference at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, announcing that elevated tsunami conditions are expected to continue for at least another day.
"The waves are unusually long," an agency official explained. "Each cycle of the wave takes about an hour, meaning tsunami activity will continue to be observed for an extended period. We expect high tsunami levels to persist for at least one day."
The agency also stated that it is currently unable to determine whether the tsunami activity will intensify or subside. "There is a possibility that even higher tsunami waves may be observed in the coming hours," the official said.
Referring to past seismic events off the Kamchatka Peninsula, the agency noted that the highest tsunami waves reached Japan approximately nine hours after the earthquake occurred.
The Meteorological Agency is urging residents to continue evacuating until tsunami warnings and advisories are officially lifted.
