TOKYO, Sep 29 (News On Japan) - In a September opinion poll conducted by TV Tokyo and the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, former Minister of State for Economic Security Takaichi was the frontrunner with 34% when respondents were asked who they believed should be the next Liberal Democratic Party president.
Koizumi, the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, followed with 25%, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi with 14%, former Secretary-General Motegi with 5%, and former Minister of State for Economic Security Kobayashi with 4%.
Among LDP supporters, however, the rankings shifted, with Koizumi leading at 33% and Takaichi at 28%.
When asked which policies proposed by both LDP presidential candidates and opposition parties they would like prioritized, 39% of respondents selected consumption tax cuts, followed by reducing social insurance premiums and abolishing the temporary gasoline tax rate at 35%, and income tax cuts and increased deductions at 33%. By age group, income tax cuts and higher deductions ranked first among those aged 18 to 50, with consumption tax cuts coming second.
Respondents were also asked which party should be considered if the LDP-Komeito government were to expand its coalition. The Democratic Party for the People was chosen by 35%, followed by the Constitutional Democratic Party at 17% and the Japan Restoration Party at 16%. Among LDP supporters, the Democratic Party for the People was preferred by 33%, the Japan Restoration Party by 25%, and the Constitutional Democratic Party by 17%.
