Trump Arrives in Japan to Bolster Security and Economic Ties

TOKYO - U.S. President Donald Trump arrived at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport on the afternoon of October 27 aboard Air Force One, marking his first visit to Japan in roughly six years and his first since the start of his second administration.

During his stay, Trump is scheduled to meet Emperor Naruhito and hold his first in-person summit with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on October 28. He is also expected to meet with the families of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea.

In addition, Trump and Takaichi plan to visit the U.S. Navy’s Yokosuka base to inspect the aircraft carrier USS George Washington. Later that evening, Trump will attend a dinner in Tokyo joined by Toyota Motor Chairman Akio Toyoda and other leading business figures.

This marks Trump’s fourth visit to Japan overall, the last being in June 2019. His arrival aboard Air Force One once again drew attention to the aircraft itself—a specially modified Boeing 747-200B introduced in 1990. The plane features three decks covering approximately 370 square meters, equipped with a presidential office, conference rooms, a galley capable of preparing meals for 100 people at once, and medical facilities suited for emergency surgery.

With midair refueling capability, Air Force One’s range is effectively unlimited, earning it the nickname “the flying White House.” It is also fitted with advanced communications systems that enable it to serve as a mobile command center in the event of a national emergency.

Before landing in Tokyo, Trump reportedly held his first phone conversation with Prime Minister Takaichi aboard the aircraft as part of preparations for their upcoming summit.
