Wakayama, Apr 22 (News On Japan) - At Kumano Hongu Taisha, a UNESCO World Heritage shrine in Wakayama Prefecture, a 'First Tea Festival' was held to dedicate freshly harvested local tea.
In a tea field within the shrine grounds, around 30 people, including members of a local women's association and elementary school students, carefully picked young green shoots one by one.
The locally renowned 'Otonashi Tea' is said to date back to the Heian period, when pilgrims from Kyoto visiting Kumano planted tea there. The tea was named after the nearby Otonashi River, which flows beside the shrine.
The newly picked tea was offered at the shrine's main hall, where prayers were made for the continued growth of the local tea industry.
This year's tea leaves are said to be of high quality. After processing, they will be sold as a regional specialty product.
